On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Qatar signed the Agreement on Transit Transport Regulation between Arab League States at the headquarters of the Arab League General Secretariat in Cairo.
This agreement comes as part of efforts by member states to strengthen economic cooperation and update previous agreements in line with regional and international changes. It serves as an amendment to the prior agreement signed in 1977.
The agreement was signed on behalf of Qatar by His Excellency Ambassador Tareq Ali Faraj Al-Ansari, Qatar’s Ambassador to Cairo and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, while His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Mohamed El-Amin Ould Akik, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Legal Affairs Sector, signed on behalf of the General Secretariat of the Arab League.
The agreement aims to enhance economic ties between Arab countries in accordance with Article 2 of the Arab League Charter, which calls for close cooperation in economic and financial sectors. The new amendments include simplifying transport between Arab countries and strengthening coordination between various sectors.
With this signature, Qatar becomes the second Arab country to sign the agreement, following Libya. This reaffirms Qatar’s commitment to bolstering Arab cooperation in transportation and regional and international economic sectors, including facilitating the movement of goods and services among Arab League countries.
The agreement will come into force once five Arab countries ratify it, and it will be applied to the remaining countries one month after their ratification documents are submitted.
This agreement represents an important step towards achieving economic integration among Arab countries, a goal the Arab League has been pursuing for decades. It also comes amid the region’s economic challenges, making the enhancement of cooperation between member states more crucial than ever.
