According to the Qatar News Agency, Qatar has become the first country in the region to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, marking a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Doha and Washington.
The program allows Qatari citizens to travel to the United States for up to 90 days without a visa. In return, U.S. citizens will enjoy the same privileges when travelling to Qatar.
Qatar’s Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force “Lekhwiya,” Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, emphasized the importance of this development, highlighting its reflection of the strong ties between Qatar and the United States.
According to international indicators, Qatar holds a leading position in security and safety among Middle Eastern and North African countries, and Sheikh Khalifa reiterated Qatar’s commitment to global security standards.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas praised the program, calling it “one of our most successful security initiatives.” He noted that Qatar’s participation enhances U.S. security by strengthening information sharing.
Starting December 1, 2024, the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) will be updated to allow Qatari citizens to apply for travel to the United States for up to 90 days without a visa.
These authorizations will generally be valid for two years. Travellers holding valid B-1/B-2 visas can continue using their visas for travel to the U.S., as these visas will remain an option.
U.S. citizens already enjoy visa-free travel to Qatar, and starting October 1, 2024, they will be able to stay in Qatar for up to 90 days, an increase from the previous 30-day period.
The U.S. Visa Waiver Program is built on integrated partnerships between the United States and participating countries based on requirements related to law enforcement, border control, and the issuance of secure electronic travel documents.
