International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People – November 29

It is a bitter irony that the anniversary of your expulsion from your homeland is also a day the world celebrates your wandering in foreign lands, an annual sting to your bleeding tragedy, a silent cry proclaiming that this land belongs to you and your ancestors before you, yet only the void hears you.

The Palestinian people harbor doubts about the sincerity of the international community represented by the United Nations. In the face of the veto wielded by Israel-supporting states for over seven decades, hope suffocates in the hearts of Palestinians, fueling the fire of simmering anger.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People’s roots trace back to a 1977 resolution by the UN General Assembly establishing November 29 as an annual observance to shed light on the Palestinian cause and their legitimate rights. This day reflects international solidarity with the Palestinians, offering an opportunity to raise awareness, demand an end to the occupation, and strive for justice and peace.

It is remarkable that this specific day was chosen because, on November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 181، which aimed to establish two independent states, one Palestinian and one Israeli. However, this resolution was not implemented as envisioned, leading to a persistent conflict and ongoing crises for the Palestinian people.

The Palestinian Nakba represents a painful event in Palestinian history when more than half of the population was displaced from their homes in 1948. These events deeply affected the lives of Palestinians, as this forced displacement created a refugee crisis that continues to this day, with approximately 6 million Palestinians living as refugees worldwide, including hundreds of thousands who have experienced additional displacement due to ongoing conflicts and wars in the region.

On this date, the United Nations organizes various events and activities, including the Palestinian Rights Exhibition. The Committee and Division for Palestinian Rights holds an annual exhibition in collaboration with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN, aiming to highlight the history, culture, and ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people.

In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 60/37, which requested that the Committee and Division for Palestinian Rights organize an annual exhibition on the International Day of Solidarity and urged member states to provide broader media support to raise awareness. This exhibition has become an important event that strengthens international solidarity and encourages support for the Palestinian cause.

In 2015, the Palestinian flag was raised in front of United Nations offices worldwide, symbolizing recognition of the State of Palestine and calling on the international community to support Palestinian rights.

In 2023, marking the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, an exhibition titled Palestine: Land and People is being held at the UN headquarters in New York. This exhibition includes photos, videos, and artworks that capture the Palestinian people’s journey from the Nakba until today.

On this occasion, a special exhibition titled Palestine: Land and People is being held at the UN headquarters in New York from November 29, 2023, to January 8, 2024, showcasing various aspects of the Palestinian experience, including cultural heritage, historical stages of displacement, and the ongoing struggle for survival.

The exhibition included a collection of photos and documents chronicling various events experienced by the Palestinian people. It also documented the Palestinian experience during the 2023 Gaza War, which led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands and the deaths of tens of thousands. The UN Secretary-General described this war as a humanitarian disaster.

International solidarity with the Palestinian people plays a crucial role in supporting their rights and amplifying their voices globally. Palestinians need continuous international support to push for a just and comprehensive peace. The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People provides an opportunity for the international community to renew its commitment to Palestinian rights and work toward ending the conflict.

The importance of this day lies in the fact that it is not merely symbolic but serves as a constant reminder of the need for earnest efforts to secure Palestinian rights. This day calls on the international community to take effective action in support of efforts aimed at achieving a fair and lasting resolution to the conflict, representing a chance to reaffirm a commitment to justice, peace, and support for the ongoing Palestinian struggle.

In 2023, Israel launched a devastating war on Gaza, leading to the displacement of hundreds of thousands and the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians. The UN Secretary-General described the situation as a humanitarian disaster, calling on the international community to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Palestinians.

The repeated Israeli airstrikes and shelling on Gaza have worsened the humanitarian crisis, adding to the severe challenges faced by Gazans who live in extremely difficult conditions, suffering from acute shortages of food, medicine, and essential services.

Despite these challenges, the Palestinian people continue their struggle for their rights and for peace. Their determination and resilience are highlighted during the events marking the International Day of Solidarity.

The United Nations seeks to play a pivotal role in supporting Palestinian rights through its resolutions and various activities. Additionally, the international community contributes by raising awareness of the Palestinian cause and supporting Palestinian rights through civil society organizations and media. Therefore, UN member states should continue supporting the Palestinian people and work towards achieving fair and comprehensive peace.

The UN also provides humanitarian and relief assistance to Palestinians through its agencies, such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which delivers essential services to millions of Palestinian refugees in education, health, and relief sectors.

Furthermore, the UN promotes dialogue and negotiation among the parties to achieve fair and comprehensive peace in the region, a goal that requires international cooperation and joint efforts to ensure respect for human rights and justice for Palestinians.

Peaceful resistance is an essential part of the Palestinian struggle, as demonstrations, sit-ins, and cultural and artistic events are organized worldwide to express solidarity and demand legitimate rights. Through these activities, Palestinians aim to convey their message to the world and call for justice and peace.

It is worth noting that the refugee issue remains a major obstacle in any attempt to reach a political resolution to the conflict. Palestinians demand the right to return to their lands from which they were displaced, a right recognized in international law and UN resolutions but continually opposed by Israel.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People reflects hope and determination for justice and peace, showing that international solidarity and continued support can play a tangible role in achieving a fair and lasting solution to this conflict.
