In its final issue of 2024, Qawl Fassel e-magazine presented ten diverse articles across ten sections, covering religious, environmental, historical, legal, social, and economic topics with a comprehensive and unique perspective.
The article Punishment of Apostasy in Islam by Ahmad Okbelbab, featured in the Islamic Studies section, explores the debate between traditional and modern views on apostasy. While some scholars consider it a prescribed punishment based on hadiths, others, such as Mahmoud Shaltout and Abu Zahra, reject it due to the absence of a Quranic text specifying a worldly punishment, citing verses affirming freedom of belief, such as “There is no compulsion in religion” (Al-Baqarah 256). The article also highlights the Prophet’s ﷺ approach of not punishing non-combatant apostates and notes that apostasy wars were politically driven. In modern times, Arab laws criminalise blasphemy but do not explicitly punish apostasy.
In the Traffic section, Huda Mohamed’s article Pros and Cons of Shifting Towards Electric Cars discusses electric vehicles’ environmental and economic benefits, such as reducing carbon emissions and operational costs. It highlights Qatar’s pioneering efforts through charging stations, financial incentives, and Vision 2030 while addressing challenges like battery costs and limited infrastructure. The article underscores the importance of government support for achieving a sustainable future.
The magazine commemorated the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in the International Days section, which the UN declared in 1977. Ahmad Okbelbab examines the significance of this day, highlighting Palestinian rights and their ongoing struggles since the 1948 Nakba. He critiques the gap between declared international solidarity and the continued Israeli occupation, noting the challenges to achieving peace despite global awareness initiatives.
In the History section, Yousif Al Hamadi’s article Shuraih the Judge: From Profound Understanding to Fair Application , delves into the evolution of the judiciary from the Prophet’s ﷺ era to the Rashidun Caliphate. The article focuses on Judge Shuraih as a model of justice, impartiality, and integrity.
In the Law section, Mohamed Elghazaly’s article “Elections and Referendums: Democracy’s Path to Justice and Prosperity” explores societal consensus through democratic tools. It highlights Qatar’s constitutional reforms in 2024, which aim to enhance transparency and consultation, and discusses the challenges of free media in promoting democracy.

Mariam Mortada’s article Women Disguised as Men to Defy Societal Constraints in the Women’s section features stories of women who overcome social barriers by presenting themselves as men to pursue professional and economic opportunities. Examples include a woman who works as a gas cylinder vendor and others who break into male-dominated professions like journalism and surgery.
In the Children’s section, Yousif Al Hamadi compares homeschooling with traditional education in his article Homeschooling: A Flexible Path to Empower Learning and Talent. He highlights the flexibility and creativity it fosters while addressing challenges such as reduced social interaction and increased parental responsibilities.
In the Local News section, Shaista Fatima’s article The Journey of the Qatari Riyal: From Gulf Rupee to Financial Stability traces the evolution of Qatar’s currency, reflecting the nation’s economic transformation from pearling to oil discovery, culminating in the introduction of the Qatari Riyal in 1973
In the Incidents section, Ahmad Okbelbab examines The Conspiratorial Interpretation of Rabbi Zvi Kogan’s Murder in the UAE, discussing various theories surrounding the case, including possible foreign involvement, while emphasising the UAE’s commitment to peace and security.
Finally, in the Expatriates section, Rand Saad’s article The History and Future of Pension Systems Across the Globe traces the development of pension systems, from Roman military practices to modern Qatari reforms. The article addresses challenges such as ageing populations and proposes solutions for sustainability.
Ahmad Okbelbab expressed his happiness with the conclusion of 2024, saying:

An intense and soul-shattering reflection. Wars are territories no one knowingly chooses to tread into, yet the innocent find themselves ensnared in these merciless zones. My heart aches for the women, children, men, and all living beings who endure unimaginable pain, through no fault of their own—merely a consequence of being born in a particular place at a particular time.
Nature can be unyielding, but human cruelty often surpasses it.
A silent prayer for all those suffering, and the ever-optimistic part of me hopes for peace to prevail—for every soul, everywhere.
